Why an iPhone screenshot can look blurry

A screenshot records the pixels currently rendered on the screen. It does not restore the resolution of the original photo, webpage or video frame underneath it. If the source was already soft, zoomed or compressed, the screenshot captures those limitations too.

Quality can drop again when the screenshot is tightly cropped, enlarged beyond its pixel dimensions or downloaded from a messaging app. The best starting point is the first full-size screenshot saved in Photos.

Check the source before trying to sharpen it

First ask whether the original content is still available. Reopen the webpage, document, photo or paused video at the clearest possible size and take a new screenshot when you can. That preserves more real information than enhancing an already reduced copy.

When the source is gone, inspect pixel dimensions and visible edges. A small screenshot with soft text has less recoverable information than a full-size capture with mild blur.

For a receipt, message, document or other accuracy-sensitive screenshot, return to the original source whenever possible. Do not treat AI-enhanced wording as a forensic or official record.

Keep a clear screenshot from degrading again

Crop only after you have preserved the full-size source. Avoid repeatedly resizing and resaving the same copy. When another person needs the best available quality, share the saved file rather than sending a screenshot of the screenshot.

Measure screenshot dimensions, visible sharpness, contrast and possible compression locally in your browser. The image is never uploaded.
